In addition to the main coronavirus site, Public Affairs wanted a simple single-page layout with vaccine promotion materials that tribes could print or share online.
The materials they provided were very large graphics designed for printing. However, all material posted on IHS.gov must be section 508 compliant, meaning it has to be accessible in web format and not just designed for print. I remediated the files to ensure they could be accessed by all web users.
Another issue is that many IHS patients and providers live in remote areas with limited internet access. A page of large graphics might load very slowly or not at all for those users. Since the page featured the same content designed for different regions and populations, there is no need to wait for all of the graphics to load in order to find the one a user wanted to print or share. I made thumbnail images of all the materials and linked them to the larger print-ready files. That way users could look at and share the smaller files online but still access the larger ones to create high-quality poster prints.
