Career Opportunities is a high-profile Indian Health Service site, with a direct link in the top level of the main menu. They wanted to overhaul their site, so we worked together to carry out a five-phase redesign.

One of my biggest contributions to the site was to give feedback and suggestions around accessibility compliance and mobile responsiveness. Career Opps provided a series of graphics and I helped them to integrate the graphics in a mobile-friendly way. For example, they initially had a thin header bar with “Careers@IHS” on it. I recommended using the larger graphic for increased visibility on smartphones, since the smaller bar would be sized down and the font unreadable on small screens.

Every page on the Career Opps site was designed and tested for multiple screen sizes, including mobile. The mobile-responsive format uses Bootstrap to ensure everything from text and images to tables and multi-column layouts converts nicely for mobile users. This is critical since most IHS.gov users access the site from a mobile browser.

The content for the redesigned site was text-heavy, with lots of information about different career paths that not every user would be interested in. We broke the content up and used predictable formatting to direct users to subpages and other IHS.gov sites for their areas of interest. We also added visual interest by using panels and block quote testimonials to break up the pages.

The large number of pages were structured in three visible navigation levels and sorted alphabetically. We used real images from IHS sites throughout.

Whenever possible, we separated the content by area and linked to further information to keep page size manageable.
